Inhalt


Mythologische Darstellungen, Helden und pagane Götter wie Aphrodite, Dionysos, Achilles und Herakles waren nicht nur in der antiken, sondern auch in der spätantiken und in der mittelbyzantinischen Kunst weiterhin abgebildet. Sie erscheinen auf spätantiken Bodenmosaiken sowie auf einer Reihe unterschiedlicher Artefakte wie luxuriösen Silberkästchen, Textilien und Schmuckstücken oder in der Buchmalerei. Krieger, Eroten, Tänzerinnen und Fabelwesen wie Greifen, Sphinxen und Sirenen zieren zudem viele mittelbyzantinische Elfenbeinkästchen und weitere Objekte in europäischen und US-amerikanischen Sammlungen. Das Proseminar bietet eine Einführung zu diesen profanen Motiven in der byzantinischen Kunst über diverse Gattungen hinweg sowie zur Kontinuität der antiken Tradition und zur sog. „Makedonischen Renaissance“.
