Das Mittelalter ist eine beliebte Epoche in Filmen, TV-Serien und Computerspielen, z. B. mit populären Shows wie Vikings oder Spielen wie Medieval: Total War. Wo passt das Oströmische Reich (Byzanz) als Teil des Phänomens Mittelalterrezeption und wie wird byzantinische Kunst und Kultur in den modernen Medien Film, Comic, Computerspiel oder sogar in der Mode dargestellt und somit in der Popkultur sichtbar gemacht? Welche Themen oder Objekte werden aufgegriffen und welche Elemente werden eingesetzt, um ein byzantinisches Flair zu suggerieren?In der Übung werden moderne Darstellungen byzantinischer Kleidung, Kunst und Architektur in der populären Kultur analysiert und es wird nach deren Vorbildern gesucht. Dabei werden grundlegende methodische Fähigkeiten übermittelt, darunter genaue Beobachtung, Beschreibung und Vergleich. Der Fokus geht allerdings über bloße Fragen der getreuen Wiedergabe hinaus. Gefragt wird auch nach der Rolle und Funktion byzantinischer Kunst und Kultur in der sog. „popular imagination“. So wird z. B. die Frage gestellt, ob sie nur als Kulisse, Kostüm und collectible items eingesetzt wird oder ob die LeserInnen, ZuschauerInnen und SpielerInnen dazu aufgefordert werden, sich tiefer damit auseinanderzusetzen? Dabei werden auch eine Reihe an Originalwerken vorgestellt und diskutiert, z. B. Hagia Sophia oder die Sergios-und-Bakchos-Kirche in Konstantinopel, der Markusdom in Venedig, spätantike und byzantinische Kleidung oder mittelbyzantinische Reliquiare und Elfenbeinkästchen.
